The Craft Work of Discipleship

Text | Luke 9:1-6

Discussion Questions

Heart

Luke describes Jesus at work in the world through His disciples in this section. The work is a warning to the wicked and a cause of comfort for the hurting. But there is a deeper work being accomplished in the hearts of the disciples. Obeying Jesus is an invitation to a meaningful life. Do you want Jesus to lead you into meaningful living? What examples of obedience from this past week do you have?

Home

The announcement of the coming Kingdom is paired with samples of judgment that Jesus has determined are out of place in His Kingdom. He sends His disciples out to evict
demons and disease from His lands. If our homes are ruled by Christ, are we making space for the vile to remain or are we seeking to have our homes glorify Him?

Harvest

The call of Jesus here is for all of His disciples to part ways with wickedness for the exaltation of His Name. Faithfulness means proclaiming His right to rule and demonstrating it in holy living. How is Jesus leading you to make much of Him this week?

Longing to See Jesus

Text | Luke 8:40-56

Discussion Questions

Heart

The people of Galilee were waiting for Jesus to return from His
encounter with the demonic force on the other side of the lake. They were glad to receive Him back because they knew His ministry to them was a blessing. How much more should we long for His return, knowing of His great love for us? How are you helping your heart long for His return?

Home

The ruler of the synagogue begged Jesus to come to his home to fix
what no one else could. Knowing the limitations of the physicians and advisors, he sought Jesus to bless his family. The job of every father and mother is to do likewise; to bless their home by bringing Jesus into it. What ways are you seeking to have Christ in your home?

Harvest

The woman in our text was considered unclean and barred from being involved in community life. She was drawn to Jesus because He sought to make Himself available to her. What are some ways that we can make Jesus
available to those that are currently lost and at odds with God? What changes
need to be made so that you are able to help people see the Gospel Truth that can save their souls?

Fruitful Christianity

Discussion Questions

Heart

Jesus tells us that a heart that has properly received the seed of the Word is knowable by its fruit. Does this description give you comfort or concern? Are you “holding fast to the Word” in your heart?

Home

Jesus warns us that a concern for the things of this world can choke out a growing seed. How can your home be a place where the hearts of all in it are helped to love the cares of the Kingdom of God?

Harvest

In this parable the Sower clearly trusts that some seed will fall upon good soil. He has not determined which soil is good and which is not. So he offers the seed without prejudice. How can we be like the sower in our communication of the Gospel? How can we trust God more in our service to Him?

Grace in Action

Text | Luke 7:36-50

Discussion Questions

Heart

In this chapter the Pharisee is
being forced to watch the sinful woman
trust Jesus. She is a grateful mess. Her
entire life is rearranged and she is
desperate to show her gratitude for His
kindness. What ways do you seek to
show your gratitude for His kindness to
you?

Home

The home is clearly intended to
be a place to worship Jesus. The
Pharisee’s home is unintentionally the
site where his own shallow worship is
exposed. His failure to show basic
hospitality revealed the deeper problem
of his own heart. Does your home
express the kind of gratitude that honors Jesus? How can your home become a place of intentional worship?

Harvest

Jesus says, “he who has been
forgiven little, loves little.” The more we
think through the Gospel story, the
deeper His grace drives into our own
lives. But if we want to express our love
to Jesus for His goodness, then we offer it to others. Who are you able to show kingdom hospitality to this week in gratitude to Christ?

Heart

John is seeking peace as he
faces likely death in prison. The key
question that John asks is on the identity of Christ. Why does having that question settled help provide peace and purpose for all other concerns of life?

Home

Doubts are not uncommon to
the Christian. The place we go for
comfort needs to be informed by John’s
example. When in doubt he took his
concern to Jesus for help. How can you
help your home turn to the Savior in
times of crisis?

Jesus brough him back to the Word. How is your trust in God’s Word leading you to live differently than those around you? How is the world able to notice your trust in God’s Word?
